Research Specialization

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I am a Professor in the Department of Fisheries Biology at Humboldt State University where I have taught in the area of fisheries management and mentored M.S. level graduate students since 2003. Additionally, I am currently in my sixth year as Chair of our Fisheries Biology program.  My research emphasizes the application of genetic approaches for making inferences into the management and conservation of fishes. A good portion of my recent research has centered on environmental DNA, including projects aimed at monitoring Chinook salmon abundance, coho salmon distribution, and endangered species range-wide metapopulation dynamics using occupancy models. The other major branch of my current research is in the area of using genomics to identify the genetic basis of local adaptation in fishes such as Chinook salmon (run-timing), Pacific lamprey (ocean- and river-maturing ecotypes), and tidewater goby (climate adaptation).
